How To Play The Boo Game

This is a great game and is really fun for everyone of all ages. The best part is that you can get your neighbors into the Halloween spirit by engaging them in this fun game called “Boo!”

In some parts of the country it is popular and in others…well, don’t be surprised if nobody has even heard of it.

Photo by GarrettcSo, you might live in a neighborhood where you think nobody is going to want to participate in this type of event, but most likey you could be surprised. Often during the holidays people are really looking for interesting ways to be involved where normally before they wouldn’t. Give it a try…What have you got to loose?

We’ll describe more in detail later, but the game goes something like this…

You print off a couple of poems with the instructions on colorful construction or copy paper. Now it doesn’t take a genius to know that orange is typically the best color to use for Halloween time.

Now, find a bucket, we will call this the treat bucket, or bowl, or something that you can fill with candy.

We’ve seen people play this game of “Boo” with candles, Halloween socks, and actually whatever your imagination can think of!

Here is what you do…You “Boo” two people at a time (kinda like “ghost knocking) leaving the stuff that you have choosen to “Boo” with anonymously on the neighbors front porch. With them, you leave the instructions and one of the poems. Remember, we are hoping that they are going to go and “Boo” additional people in your neighborhood in return. After you have done the “Boo’ing”, you are going to put up a sheet of paper called a “Boo!” on the outside of your door. This is simply a sheet of paper with the “Boo” really large so others that are playing the game will know that you have already gotten involved in the fun.

In a little more detail, this is how the game is done:
1) You will want to start the game towards the end of September up until late October. Note: If you want until everyone is decorated for Halloween, you’re going to probably be too late. Ideally, you would want the game to spread all around your neighborhood and that usually will take some time, so go get started. Remember it’s a game!

2) Pick out some Halloween type items to be included in your “Boo” gifts. Keep in mind that if you start too early though, a lot of the Halloween treats and things won’t be available in the stores yet.

3) Pick out a “Boo” poem and start making your copies of it. Although there are going to be many variations of these poems and more that you can choose from, we’ve got a couple here for you to start with…

“Boo!
To our good friends on the street;
Our homes’ locations made us meet;
You now have been Boo’d, but who would we be?
We’ll never tell, it’s a secret, you see.
We placed these goodies for you and yours;
Then we ran fast, after knocking the door!
Happy Halloween!”

Here is another one that is a little longer, but is fun too:

“The air is cool, the season fall
Soon Halloween will come to all;
The neighbors are after things to do
In fact, a neighbor brought this to you;
“Boo” is a sign of friendship power
Just hang it up and watch it double by hour;
On your front door is where it works
It wards off solicitors and scary jerks;
The treat that came with friendly note
Are yours to keep; enjoy them both;
The power comes when friends like you
Copy this and make it two;
Then others here among our friends
Will give warm fuzzies that will not end;
We’ll all have smiles upon our face
No one will know who “boo’ed” whose place;
Just one short day to share your Boo
You must be quick so they don’t know who;
And don’t forget a nifty treat
Like something cute or something sweet;
Please join the fun, let’s really hear it
And spread some “Boos” and neighborhood spirit!

4) Pick out a couple of neighbors that you can target as your “Boo” suspects!

Make the game more festive and fun by putting a “spirited” picture of a halloween style ghost or jack-o-lantern or anything else that looks like it might say “Boo!”. You could even include a few details in the flyer about what they should do next.

Hey, in case you think one of these poems itself won’t be clear enough to explain what you are up to…then go ahead and attach the “Boo” poem to the goodie bag, basket, or whatever you have created as your “Boo”, and run out one night dropping your goodies on your neighbors doorsteps. If you are the one to be getting this fun Halloween game started in your neighborhood, be sure that you are ready to do more than only two of your neighborhood houses.
Photo by Loren Javier

You will probably find that some people simply won’t want to participate and if that is the case, you want to have had “Boo”ed enough people to where as you will get adequate participation in the game. This is what will make it fun.

So go ahead and get started because this Halloween you’re going for ia neighborhood full of “Boo” doors by Halloween night…

You can “Boo” it!
